THE Southern Councils Group has supported Wollongong City Council’s decision to oppose coal seam gas activity in the water catchments.
“Not enough is yet known about the impacts of this activity, whether it be exploration or mining, to allow it to occur in the very sensitive water catchment areas which are so prevalent in our region” said SCG chairperson and Kiama Mayor Sandra McCarthy.
“When SCG met last year it was agreed to confirm that all member councils of Southern Councils Group were of the same mind on this hot issue for the region.
“Now that has occurred and we have forwarded a Joint Statement on the Southern Councils Group position to the Legislative Council Standing Committtee No 5.” Ms McCarthy said.
