BEGA Valley Shire Council will sponsor a Centenary of Federation race day at Kalaru later this year.

Council adinistrator, Mr Calvert resolved last week that council allocate $2000 from its Centenary of Federation funds towards sponsorship of the event.

The Centenary of Federation Cup Day will be hosted by the Sapphire Coast Turf Club on August 18 and will be the first race meet of the 2001-02 season.

Besides the normal racing program, secretary-manager of the club Joanne Hardy is hoping to organise a number of additional activities with a Centenary of Federation theme exploring the region’s past, present and future.

Steps will be taken to have the event officially endorsed by the NSW Centenary of Federation – ensuring it will receive widespread publicity.

Council’s general manager, Mr David Jesson, said horse-racing had a very long history in the Bega Valley Shire and the decision to sponsor a Centenary of Federation Cup day and to assist with the organisation of the day’s activities could be expected to enjoy broad community support.

The cup day will tie in with a number of other Centenary of Federation events and activities being organised by Mr Ross Williams who is the local co-ordinator of Centenary of Federation activities.
