WEATHER conditions were almost perfect at the Eden pool last Saturday when twenty-four members of the Bega Amateur Swimming Club took part in the Restricted Age Swims.

This competition is for children from under eight to fourteen years and the two fastest swimmers in each stroke, over fifty metres, can now go on to compete in the finals which will be held at the Homebush S.I.A.C. on March 11.

Ten year old Chris Dunning qualified in the backstroke and we wish him all the best when he competes at the next level.

For some of our younger swimmers this was only their first or second competition in a fifty metre pool and they can be very proud of their efforts.

Mitchell Carter, David Buggy, Elly McMillan, Cassandra Ruggiero, Clark D’Arcy, Lalage Riddell, Kaycee West and Kristine Carter all swam well, especially as for some of them it was the second day in a row they had competed in the Eden pool, Friday being the second level of competition for Primary Schools.

Another of the younger swimmers who swam well and is getting his strokes together well was eight year Todd Rollason.

It was back to the Bega pool on Monday night for time trials and fifty-eight children took part in the freestyle, backstroke and butterfly.

It was good to see some of those children who have had an extended holiday back to compete.

Our raffle prize winner still remains a mystery so we hope someone will claim it before next week.

Parents are asked to note that this year they will be asked to pay for half of the cost of their children’s entry fees to the Southern District Carnival, held in March.

In previous years the club has paid for these entries but with the increased cost and the large number of children competing this is no longer financially viable.

Swimmers are reminded that next Monday, February 26, is the last night of regular time trials.

The four Monday nights in March will be taken up with championship swims but any of the younger swimmers who do not wish to contest the long distance events are welcome to come along and swim their normal laps in the allocated swims.

Championship day will be held on March 31, with a 10am start and a list of qualifiers will be placed on the noticeboard after the last night of time trials. Please check to see if you have qualified.

Another reminder, Friday, March 2, is a brace relay and record attempt night. Come along, bring your BBQ tea and enjoy a sociable night.

In the Clubhouse is a list for those people who would like to become more involved with the club and learn how to time-keep, become a starter, or a recorder or any other technical procedure.

Remember that the club does not run by itself and many hands make light work. Your children will benefit, as well as you.
